superheroes?

hey y'all, we're back at it again with another blog post!! this week we have to create a superhero based on the my birthday is august 28th, so my superhero has to do with the motor cortex (voluntary movements) and serotonin ("feel good" emotions).

origin story
one gloomy night in a small town called georgiana, seventeen-year-old noelle grimsky was walking back from her 9-to-5 job at the local grocery store. as she walked down the sidewalk towards her house, a huge wolf-like creature barreled towards her, eventually slamming poor noelle to the ground. the impact was great; her head took some heavy damage and it was unknown whether she would survive. within two hours, she miraculously opened her eyes and was able to function normally. the next few days were strange for young noelle. she was able to feel other people's happiness radiating off of them, and this allowed her to perform inhuman movements. these movements allowed her to be physically superior to all others. however, the only way she was able to move like this was through happy emotions. without it, she functioned normally. 

over the years, noelle was able to train herself to use her powers to its full potential. knowing she could use her abilities to benefit others, she took on a superhero persona as happy feet. she now uses her abilities to fight crime in underprivileged areas and hopes to bring her happiness to those who need it.


now, we all know that two (or more) brains work better than one, which is why noelle has recently joined a superhero squad. introducing...the untouchables!!

this week, i found an article describing the impact of poverty on children's brain activity . in an experiment, a team of psychologists used a fNIRS to evaluate the brain activity of 42 children in rural india. they tested their visual working memory, and were shocked with the results. it was found that the children living in poverty showed weaker brain activity and poorer distractor suppression in the left front cortex of the brain. this is due to a variety of factors, such as parental income, education, caste, and religion.  it saddened me to find out that poverty not only took a toll on individuals physically, but mentally as well. this made me appreciate all of the blessings i have and the environment i am raised in. the fact that many families in rural areas are trapped in a constant cycle of destitution is the harsh reality the world has to witness. however, the study does shed light on brain plasticity, saying that there is hope for children to break the mindset assoc...

i see you're interested in taking psych. good choice! this course provides you with interesting information pertaining to what makes you, well, you! you should be well aware that this is an AP course, so no easy work here! the bulk of this class is filled with tons of vocab, so i suggest doing a bit each day so you won't have to procrastinate the day before the test. speaking of tests, study hard for them. they will become much easier if you know all the vocab since the tests are multiple choice questions applying to those words. my favorite activity this year was modeling the brain with an orange and different pieces of candy. even though we didn't get to eat the product (that would've been gross, anyway), it was pretty cool to be able to hold a replica of our brains in food form. this activity will leave your hands smelling like oranges and you begging for more. to ms. halfen: i suggest doing less content digs because students just mindlessly copy facts down and...
